Academic Study on a Adult Company

TranslationsXXX, the first translation company to service the Adult Industry, has been chosen as a subject for a study being conducted by a professor from the University of Alberta. Professor Sathya Rao is conducting personal research on adult entertainment, and he is planning to write an academic paper that features TranslationsXXX as a case study. The results will be made available to the public after the research has been completed.

Mr Rao thought that TranslationsXXX was the perfect target since his study is interested in the translation of erotic and pornographic texts. This study comes within a larger reflection on what he calls the “erotics of translation,” which involves the translation of erotic texts (French/English), but also includes translation conceived as an erotic gesture.

Mr Rao says, “As you know, adult sites represent more than half of the resources available on WWW, yet there are very few academic studies to my knowledge devoted to this matter (the reasons underlying this lack of interest are obvious), and particularly to that of adult content translation. Clearly, my purpose is not to judge the type of material you are using but to try to remain as objective as possible in analyzing your translation marketing and textual strategies. To put it in more general terms, I am interested in the ways sex is related to language, image and culture in the context of globalization.”

Mr. Rao, after researching the Web, found TranslationsXXX. After a conversation with the company's owner Moreno " Mo" Aguiari, both parties agreed to a collaboration to accomplish Mr.Rao’s research goals. TranslationsXXX sent a questionnaire to all the translators working for the company, prepared by UA’s professor, with 25 questions that helped to outline the translation procedures, techniques and software used.

Mo asked Mr. Rao for his opinion about the Adult Industry, and about the reaction his research has received from his colleagues. “I told some colleagues about this research, they were kind puzzled,” admitted Mr. Rao. “But when given further explanation, they quickly understand the point and the originality of the research. Regarding the adult industry I see it as a very interesting yet poorly documented phenomenon that needs to be looked into and debated in the proper way, that is without resorting to value-judgments as it is too often the case.”

The results of the study will be published soon.
